GhostBed vs Sleep Number: What’s the Difference?

Let’s start by exploring how GhostBed and Sleep Number differ. GhostBed makes high-quality, reasonably-priced mattresses in a variety of foam and hybrid styles. We’re also known for the special cooling technology in our beds.

Sleep Number makes mattresses with adjustable air chambers that allow you to change the firmness of your bed. They do not offer any hybrid mattress options.

Origins

GhostBed is the brainchild of Marc Werner, part of the family that created the beloved Werner Ladder Company. Marc grew up in factories, learning the ins and outs of creating a quality product folks will use for years to come.

His formative years were spent experimenting with textiles and innovating manufacturing methods. So when sports injuries left him in need of the most supportive mattress possible, he decided to create his own.

To this day, GhostBed is still a family-run company. Marc and his wife, Donna sleep on a GhostBed every night, and so do their children and grandchildren. They firmly believe in creating a product that you’ll be proud to tuck your own kids (or yourself!) into.

Sleep Number was founded by Robert and JoAnne Walker after leaving the ComfortAire Corporation, which invented air-supported sleep systems.

About the Mattresses

Simply put, GhostBed and Sleep Number produce very different mattresses. At GhostBed, our emphasis is on making you the highest quality mattress at the most accessible price. (We’re known for our frequent and massive sales!)

We leverage the expertise of Marc and an ever-growing team of industry specialists to bring you beds on the cutting-edge of comfort technology (without any gimmicks).

Because everyone is different, we focus on making mattresses that support a wide variety of sleepers–so whether you need a cushy, soft all-foam mattress or something supportive with coils, we’ve got you covered.

We’re beloved for the cooling technology we infuse into our mattresses–after all, we make The Coolest Bed in the World™–and we change the game for many folks who struggle with poor sleep.

One recent customer said she wished she had known about our cooling beds when she was in menopause. They really make that much of a difference.

Sleep Number, on the other hand, is focused on making a bed with air cells that inflate and deflate to customize firmness. Because this is their primary focus, it may be harder to find a variety of mattresses that suit your needs. (If you need a mattress with coils, you’re out of luck.)

Some argue that the inflatable air cells in Sleep Number’s beds feel a little too, well, airy. Recent reviews on their Classic mattress state that it feels like “a blow-up bed” and “an inflatable mattress that has a hole in it.” Others go so far as to say it’s “an air mattress, basically.”

Cost

Most of the time, a GhostBed mattress is friendlier on your wallet than a Sleep Number mattress. This is doubly true when you factor in GhostBed’s frequent sales.

Sleep Number charges more for the ability to adjust the firmness of your mattress. But when you’ve found the most supportive, high-quality mattress for your body type, you shouldn’t need to adjust its firmness. That’s why at GhostBed, we put so much emphasis on helping you find the right mattress for your body and have a generous trial period and warranty to make sure you’re satisfied.

Even so, we understand customization is important in other ways, which is why our adjustable base is a customer favorite, and our new massage mattress allows you to tailor your experience to whatever your body is craving that day.

Trial Period and Warranty

At GhostBed, we’re confident you’re going to love your mattress. We have a mattress quiz designed to help you get your purchase right on the first try, and a dedicated team of Sleep Experts standing by to answer your questions.

Still, we want to make sure you’re absolutely confident about your purchase, which is why we give you 101 nights to make sure you love your mattress. (That’s one more night than Sleep Number gives you.)

We also design our mattresses to last for the long haul, which means they’re all warrantied for 20-25 years–almost double Sleep Number’s warranty of 10 to 15 years.

You’ll find hundreds of reviews on our site attesting to the quality of our mattresses, with at least one reviewer giving the ultimate accolade: that the mattress is “mother-in-law approved.”

Comfort

You don’t have to take our word for it. People generally find GhostBed mattresses more comfortable than Sleep Number mattresses, with customers rating Ghostbed at an average of 4.8 stars and Sleep Number at 4.7.

Independent mattress review sites, like Mattress Clarity, give GhostBed a score of 4.1 and Sleep Number a 3.9, due in part to disparities in comfort.

Talking about our Classic mattress–a customer favorite–Mattress Clarity says:

“The GhostBed mattress has a balanced foam feel that’s both plush and responsive. The latex foam quickly springs back into place after pressure is applied, but the memory foam has more of a quicksand sort of feel. You’ll feel the comfort layers contour your body, but you won’t feel ‘stuck inside’ the mattress."

It’s that swaddling, but not suffocating, comfort that makes the GhostBed so comfortable–without any of the nuisance of deflating air cells.

Shipping

When your old mattress is disrupting your sleep, you don’t want to wait weeks for a new one. That’s part of why GhostBed partners with boutique factories across the United States and Canada . You get your mattress sooner because you likely don’t have to wait for it to travel across the country. Plus, shipping is free.

Sleep Number delivers their mattresses within two to six weeks. They charge a fee for delivery and (mandatory) setup of their beds.
