Materials and Quality

When you're considering the quality of a mattress, it's important to know who's making it. Many mattress brands were founded by folks who don't have hands-on experience creating quality products.

On the other hand, Marc Werner, the founder of GhostBed, grew up in a family with a 100-year history of manufacturing high-quality products in the United States. Marc's grandfather founded Werner Ladder Company—best known for inventing aluminum and fiberglass ladders.

Ladders must be high-quality to be safe, so Marc was raised to be diligent about using the best, sturdiest materials available when manufacturing a product. He brought that same attention to detail to the first mattress he created in 2001, and he's been innovating ever since.

Meanwhile, Casper was founded in 2014 by a group of five business moguls.

GhostBed uses high-quality, cooling materials in all its mattresses.

The foundation of your mattress, like the foundation of your home, must be high quality. So GhostBed builds its Classic mattress with an industry-leading 7.5" of high-density support foam.

Meanwhile, Casper's Original mattress has a 5.5" support layer.

GhostBed tops the base of each mattress with additional layers of springs, gel memory foam or latex, depending on the mattress you select, so you get tailored support all night long. Customers report “life-changing comfort” as a result.

GhostBed also uses cooling technology in every mattress, including patented materials in their Luxury and Premium collections. The signature Ghost Ice cover, for example, is formulated with a phase-change material that absorbs heat from your body.

Casper offers their cooling technology on the Casper Wave Hybrid Snow mattress—which is about a $400 upgrade from the Casper Wave Hybrid. The reviews on the Wave Hybrid Snow are mixed, with one customer reporting “there is nothing snowy about it. It doesn't cool anything. It sleeps HOT.”

Trial Period and Warranty

GhostBed offers a trial period of 101 days while Casper gives customers 100 days to decide if a mattress is right for them.

Both GhostBed and Casper ask that you try your mattress for 30 days before deciding if you'll keep it.

GhostBed offers an industry-leading 20-year warranty on its Classic mattress and 25 years on all other mattresses in the line. Meanwhile, Casper provides a 10-year warranty on its mattresses.

When it comes to comfort, GhostBed generally earns higher scores than Casper. In a review of the two mattress brands, Sleepopolis gave GhostBed an overall rating of 4.6 and Casper an overall rating of 4.1.

Why did GhostBed come out ahead? Let's look at the GhostBed Classic as an example. Here's how it stacks up against the Casper Original Mattress:

The Classic starts with a 7.5" support layer, which is 2" thicker than Casper's support layer.

As a result, the GhostBed Classic will support an industry-leading 750 pounds. Casper does not provide a weight limit for their mattresses—a feature some customers find frustrating as they try to determine the best fit for their body type.

GhostBed Classic features three cooling layers for deep support: an aerated latex, gel memory foam and a breathable cover.

Meanwhile, Casper uses Zoned Support™ and an AirScape™ layer to promote airflow.

Customers have mixed success with the Zoned Support™ layer, with one customer sharing that their Casper Original “offered subpar support.” They went on to say “there is no body contouring nor firmness, just soft unsupportive foam that feels cheap.”
