Another important thing to know: GhostBed’s founder, Marc, has been creating mattresses since 2001. Purple was founded in 2015.

Despite the expert craftsmanship that goes into a GhostBed mattress, GhostBed’s Luxury and Premium collections are significantly lower in cost than Purple’s Premium and Luxe collection offerings.

Consumers searching for a foam-based bed-in-a-box with excellent customer reviews, an industry-leading warranty, and a lower price for deluxe support and cooling features will love GhostBed mattresses.

Materials and Quality

Fun fact: if your mattress compresses more than a couple of inches when you lay on it, it's time to get a new one! A sagging mattress can lead to pain and a poor night of sleep.

That's why GhostBed uses high-density foam as the base layer for all of its mattresses, leading to less compression.

The base layer of your mattress is like the foundation of your house—so it's important that it's high quality. At GhostBed, we are so confident in the materials we use that we offer one of the best warranties in the business. (More on that soon.)

GhostBed tops the base foam with additional layers—like springs, gel memory foam or latex, depending on the model you choose—so you get that perfect balance of support and comfort. Customers report they “have no more back pain” and “sleep like a baby” after switching to a GhostBed mattress.

GhostBed also uses cooling technology in every mattress, including proprietary materials in their Luxury and Premium collections. The signature Ghost Ice cover, for example, is designed with a phase-change material that absorbs heat upon contact.

Purple builds their mattresses with the GelFlex® Grid: a responsive polymer layer that gives the mattress a unique feel. You can feel the grid as you press down on the mattress—a feature some folks find off-putting.

Real Mattress Reviews warns consumers the Grid hasn't been around or tested long enough to prove the durability of the material. Additionally, they say the grid design collapses outward when you're lying near the edge of the mattress, making it less ideal for sharing a bed.

If you're in the market for a basic mattress, you're likely comparing the GhostBed Classic to the original Purple mattress. Prices for these two are neck and neck, but we're often running awesome promotions that bring the final cost below Purple.

If you're looking for additional cooling and support features, you'll be comparing GhostBed's Luxury and Premium collections to Purple's Premium and Luxe collections. This is where your wallet begins to feel the difference!

Many of Purple's Premium and Luxe options cost significantly—sometimes thousands of dollars—more than the mattresses in GhostBed's Luxury and Premium collections.

So especially if you're opting for a mattress with additional features, GhostBed will often give you way more bang for your buck.

Trial Period and Warranty

Ultimately, the only way to be sure a mattress is right for you is to sleep on it. Luckily, GhostBed and Purple are both generous with their trial periods.

Purple gives you 100 nights to see if a mattress is right for you, while Ghostbed gives you 101 nights. Both will refund you 100% if you decide your mattress isn't for you.

Purple and GhostBed both ask you to let your body adjust to your new mattress before deciding its fate.

There's a 21-day waiting period for Purple and a 30-day period for GhostBed. After this trial period, you can return your mattress if you're confident it's not right for you.

GhostBed has an industry-leading warranty, providing 20 years of coverage for its Classic mattress and 25 years for all other mattresses in the line.

Meanwhile, Purple's mattresses are warrantied for 10 years.

Comfort

When it comes to comfort, the feedback is clear: more folks are satisfied with GhostBed's mattresses than Purple's.

Purple's customers give their mattresses an average rating of 4.4, while GhostBed's customers rate their purchases an average of 4.8.

Reviewers talk about the “bounce” and contouring effects of the mattresses along with the pressure relief they provide.

Real Mattress Reviews had this to say about GhostBed Classic's comfort:

“GhostBed maintains good bounce, which makes it easier to adjust positions and not feel stuck.”

The review also highlights the GhostBed Classic's cooling qualities, an essential part of a comfortable sleep:

“Foam mattresses can sleep warm. However, the design of the GhostBed Classic with latex on top and gel memory foam on the bottom helps it disperse heat efficiently. I did not experience excessive heat at all.”

What exactly makes the GhostBed Classic so cool and comfortable? Let's look at the GhostBed Classic as an example. Here's how it stacks up against the Purple Mattress:

The Classic starts with a 7.5" support layer, which is 3.5" thicker than Purple's support layer.

As a result, GhostBed mattresses will support 750 pounds. Purple suggests you limit the weight on their mattresses to 600 pounds.

GhostBed Classic features three cooling layers for deep support: an aerated latex, gel memory foam and a breathable cover.

Meanwhile Purple features two layers, its Purple GelFlex® Grid and a breathable cover. Many customers cite the mattress's thinness as their primary reason for returning it.

Most reviewers prefer the GhostBed Classic—especially those looking for pressure relief.

Thanks to the latex and memory foam blend, you'll get a responsive and contoured-hug feel. The GhostBed Classic is also denser, making it a better choice for heavier people.
